The Masque of the Red Death La máscara de la Muerte Roja

Edgar Allan Poe · 1842
terror · parábola
OriginalB1A2

For a long time the “Red Death” killed the people of that country. No illness was ever so deadly, or so ugly to see. Blood was its sign: the redness and the horror of blood.

First came sharp pains. Then the world went round and round. Then blood came out through the skin all over the body, and the sick man died.

The scarlet marks on the body, and above all on the face, kept everyone away. Friends did not come near. Nobody helped a man with those marks on him.

And the whole thing — the first pain, the illness, the end — took half an hour.

But Prince Prospero was happy. He was brave, and he was clever. When half his people were dead, he called his friends to him.

A thousand came: knights and ladies of his court. All of them were strong and full of laughter. He took them to a great stone house with high walls.

The house was huge and beautiful. The prince built it in his own strange, grand way. A high wall went all round it. The wall had gates of iron.

When everyone was inside, the men brought fire and heavy hammers. They melted the iron and closed the gates for ever. Now nobody could go out, and nobody could come in.

They wanted it so. Inside, a man could go mad with fear and run to the gates. Now there were no gates to open.

There was food enough for many months. The guests could laugh at the illness now. The world outside could take care of itself. It was foolish to be sad, foolish to think.

The prince gave them everything for pleasure. There were clowns, there were poets, there were dancers, there were musicians. There was Beauty, and there was wine.

All this was inside. Safety was inside too. Outside was the “Red Death.”

Todo esto estaba dentro. La seguridad estaba dentro también. Fuera estaba la «Muerte Roja».

Five or six months went by. Outside the walls the illness was worse than ever.

Pasaron cinco o seis meses.

Inside, Prince Prospero gave his thousand friends a masked ball. It was the most splendid masked ball anyone could remember.

That masked ball was a rich and beautiful thing to see. But first I must tell you about the rooms. There were seven of them, a line of rooms fit for a king.

In many palaces a line of rooms is long and straight. The doors slide back into the walls. You can see all the way to the end.

Here it was not like that. The duke loved everything bizarre, and his house showed it.
