LeerMy valet dared to break into the château by force. I was terribly wounded. He did not want me to spend a night in the open air. The château was one of those dark and grand old buildings. Such buildings have stood for centuries in the Appennines, in real life as well as in the novels of Mrs. Radcliffe. Its people left it very recently, it seemed. They did not go away for long.
We took one of the smallest and simplest rooms. It was in a remote turret of the building. Its decorations were rich, but torn and very old. Old weapons hung on its walls. Many, many modern paintings hung there too. They were very lively, in rich golden frames.
The paintings were not only on the main walls. The château had a strange, wild shape. So paintings hung also in its many small corners. Perhaps my delirium was already beginning. Perhaps that was why these paintings interested me so deeply.
So I gave Pedro three orders. First, to close the heavy shutters—it was already night. Then, to light the tall candelabrum by the head of my bed. And last, to open wide the black velvet curtains around the bed itself.
I wanted all this for one reason. Maybe I could not sleep. But at least I could look at these pictures. Then I could read a little, and then look again. There was a small book on the pillow. It seemed to be a book about these very pictures. It described them and judged them.
Yo quería todo esto por una razón. Quizá no podría dormir.
For a long, long time I read—and I gazed at the pictures with deep love. The hours flew by, fast and wonderful. Deep midnight came. The candelabrum stood in a bad place. That did not please me. My valet was asleep, and I did not want to wake him. So I reached out with difficulty and moved it myself. Now it shone more fully on the book.
But this move did something that I never expected. The candles (for there were many) now shone into a corner. Until then, a bedpost kept that corner in deep shadow. And there, in bright light, I saw a picture. Before that moment I did not notice it at all. It was the portrait of a young girl, almost a woman.
I looked at the painting quickly. Then I closed my eyes. Why did I do that? At first even I did not know. But with shut eyes I thought about the reason.
I did it without thinking. I needed time for thought—time to be sure of my eyes. I wanted to quiet my imagination. Then I could look again with a calmer, surer eye. A few moments later I looked hard at the painting again.
