LeerThe policeman on the beat walked up the street slowly and proudly. The slow proud walk was his habit. It was not a show for people, because there was almost nobody to see him.
The time was barely 10 o’clock at night. A cold wind blew, and it tasted of rain. The wind almost emptied the streets.
Apenas eran las 10 de la noche. Soplaba un viento frío, y sabía a lluvia. El viento casi había vaciado las calles.
He tried the doors as he went. He turned his club in his hand with clever movements. Sometimes he looked along the quiet street with a careful eye.
The officer was strong and big. He walked with a little roll of his shoulders. He looked exactly like a good policeman.
People here went to bed early. Sometimes you could see the light of a cigar store, or of a place open all night. But most of the doors belonged to shops, and those shops closed long ago.
In the middle of one block the policeman suddenly slowed down. A man stood in the doorway of a dark hardware store. He leaned against the wall, with an unlighted cigar in his mouth.
The policeman walked up to him. The man spoke first, and he spoke quickly.
El policía se le acercó. El hombre habló primero, y habló deprisa.
“It’s all right, officer,” he said in a calm voice. “I’m just waiting for a friend. It’s an appointment made twenty years ago. It sounds a little funny to you, doesn’t it? Well, I can explain, if you want to be sure that everything is all right.
“About that long ago there was a restaurant here, where this store stands now. It was ‘Big Joe’ Brady’s restaurant.”
“Until five years ago,” said the policeman. “Then they pulled it down.”
—Hasta hace cinco años —dijo el policía—. Entonces lo derribaron.
The man in the doorway struck a match and lit his cigar. The light showed his face. It was pale, with a strong square jaw and sharp eyes.
There was a little white scar near his right eyebrow. The pin in his tie was a large diamond, set in a strange way.
“Twenty years ago tonight,” said the man, “I had dinner here at ‘Big Joe’ Brady’s. I was with Jimmy Wells, my best friend and the finest man in the world. He and I grew up here in New York, together, just like two brothers.
“I was eighteen and Jimmy was twenty. The next morning I was going to start for the West and make my fortune. Nobody could pull Jimmy out of New York. He thought it was the only place on earth.
“That night we agreed on one thing. We would meet here again, in exactly twenty years, at the same date and time. It did not matter how we lived then. It did not matter how far we had to come.
No importaba cómo viviéramos entonces.
